them, and the city sidewalk,<br \/>till they smelled\u2014dry and dense,\u00a0<br \/>a distillation of dusty concrete.<br \/>Among the other First Communicants,\u00a0<br \/>I tried to look away.<br \/>My veil scratched my head and slid to the side;<br \/>my tights itched.<br \/>Light warmed my arms and face,<br \/>but the May air was only cool.<br \/>Inside, in the air-conditioned chill,<br \/>I was too focused on the procession to freeze.<br \/>I saw my mom aiming a camera\u2014<br \/>Dad&#8217;s eyebrows crinkled in tearful love,<br \/>like how he&#8217;d cried when he first held me.<br \/>Did I know what to do?
