The night you were to be born
we drove up Angeles Crest to throw<\/p>

down blankets and crane our necks
to the north sky, to see just one<\/p>

we were sure the hem of the dark
would fray its edges\u2014<\/p>

would fray or burst the seams
of the horizon\u2014I’ve heard<\/p>

a meteor is only an ancient pinch
of sand, maybe a pure silver dollar<\/p>

of fire light, scrawling sure arcs
across the sky. Is each<\/p>

an announcement? We listen\u2014
strident eyes on one dot<\/p>

in the northwest\u2014
and this is a truth<\/p>

for life\u2014in rest, remain
focused on a fixed point.<\/p>

We wait for the luminescence
to write itself across the tents<\/p>

like orange birthday candles
side long\u2014melted edges<\/p>

and perfect lines strung across the night,
drawing in a breath, draped<\/p>

between the ground and the double-
