On the drive we see two falcons and one black and white bird\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

A mockingjay<\/em> dad says,\u00a0<\/p>

though he knows that isn\u2019t right.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Detoured, we drive, the horizon gone by<\/p>

like a puff of smoke.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

At the care home in Grenfell, Teresa never says his name\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

She knows me as pastor<\/em> says my father,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

though he knows when we leave<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

she will lean in and say,\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

as she always does,<\/p>

I wouldn\u2019t recognize you on the street anywhere.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>

\u00a0I wouldn\u2019t know who you were if you told me.<\/em><\/p>

<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>

On the drive home, horizon gone by<\/p>

like a sheet of ice on the pond,<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

my father stops the car at the reservation store.<\/p>

The girl behind the counter talks to him softly.<\/p>

Later, in the car, he will tell me\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

I buried her mother.<\/em><\/p>

I can\u2019t remember her name.<\/em><\/a><\/p>

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>

Back in the car the road splits the field in half\u2014<\/p>

on one side the wheat has been cut down,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

on the other it has yet to be.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Did you notice the graveyard was big enough <\/em>he says,<\/p>

that if all the living died they could be buried there<\/em>,<\/p>

but no word about the digging.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Through the windshield the sky overhead is clear,<\/p>

though clouds rim the edge of the horizon<\/p>

pushed down and away.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

As the light falls, we can see shafts of sun<\/p>

coming down through the clouds,<\/p>

angled and translucent<\/a>,<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

we see right where they fall,<\/p>

and right where they start\u2014<\/p>

the whole goddamned operation.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
