introduced to The Joy Luck Club—a novel about immigrant Chinese mothers and their American-born daughters—by my own mother. As I glided through Amy Tan’s lyrical prose, I felt a strange sense of home. I was born in America, but grew up in northeast China where I learned fluent Mandarin while attending a local public school. While reading the book, certain phrases and words sparked hints of memory from my adolescence. For example, “Feathers from a Thousand Li Away,” the title of the first section, reminded me of a poem we memorized in third grade where I learned that a li is a traditional Chinese measurement of distance. This sense of familiarity grew as I read aloud the commonplace Mandarin words my own family uses, like chifanle when it’s time to eat. As an American who grew up in China and then moved back to the States at fifteen, I felt a kinship with the book’s characters who navigate two cultures, languages, and generations.

Amy Tan’s 1989 debut The Joy Luck Club is all about the cultural translation involved in two generations understanding one another. The novel is recognized as a classic of Asian-American fiction and led to a 1993 movie that was one of the first to allow Asian-American actresses to depict their own life stories. While labeled a novel in the subtitle, Joy Luck Club lacks a central narrator. Instead eight women—four mothers and their daughters—share the pages. The mothers were born in China in the 1930s, immigrated to the United States, and raised their daughters in San Francisco in the 1960s. Each chapter could be a stand-alone short story, but Tan ties the characters together in a mahjong group called the “Joy Luck Club” where the mothers meet each week to eat, play, and brag about their daughters.

At the heart of Tan’s novel is generational and cultural tension. The daughters, baby boomers born in the ‘60s and adulting in the late ‘80s, reflect on their difficulties straddling cultural boundaries. As a child, Waverly, one of the daughters, discovers an aptitude for chess and her mother, Lindo, enters her into tournaments. Lindo’s constant bragging over her daughter’s achievements however, offends Waverly’s sense of American individualism (she won the tournaments, after all), so she refuses to play or speak to her mother. Even when she and Lindo make up, Waverly has lost her giftedness at chess and stops playing altogether. The competition between two generation’s cultural worldviews, one where parents claim their child’s achievements and one where a child’s achievements are her own, leads to a breach in harmony and a loss of both joy and luck.

As the novel progresses, Tan fleshes out these differing cultural understandings. The Chinese-born mothers, Suyuan, An-mei, Lindo, and Ying-ying, interpret their life stories through the lens of fate and the symbolism of folklore. Their daughters June, Rose, Waverly, and Lena struggle to understand the almost mystical way their mothers see the world. “For all these years I kept my mouth closed so selfish desires would not fall out,” Ying-ying opens her chapter, “All these years I kept my true nature hidden, running along like a small shadow so nobody could catch me. And because I moved so secretly now my daughter does not see me.” Each of the mothers echoes this sentiment of feeling unknown and unseen by her daughters. Ying-ying believes this stems from her silence, from not telling her daughter her life story.

Lena, Ying-Ying’s daughter, also senses this disconnect in their relationship, but she sees its source in her mother’s unusual perceptivity: “To this day, I believe my mother has the mysterious ability to see things before they happen…. One time…she looked at the way our new apartment sat too steeply on the hill. She said the new baby in her womb would fall out dead, and it did.” When Ying-ying visits Lena, she predicts that a wobbly nightstand in the guest bedroom will topple over, a symbol of the way Lena and her husband’s marriage is on the brink of divorce. Both predictions prove true, unsettling Lena and allowing her mother’s way of viewing the world to creep into her own life.

While the two generations in the novel do not see eye-to-eye, Tan shows through parallel narratives that they are more alike than they think. Before leaving China, the mothers battle mistreatment as concubines and fight against traditional marriage structures—Lindo Jong manipulates her superstitious mother-in-law to escape an arranged marriage, and An-Mei watches her mother use opium to escape her life as a concubine. The mothers experience extreme levels of relational trauma during their childhoods, and their daughters also struggle to connect with the men in their lives, albeit under less harrowing circumstances. Two of them go through divorces, one is perpetually single, and the fourth struggles to graft her white fiancé into her family. Tan traces these relational crises through both generations as a nod to Chinese culture’s focus on fate and generational repetition. Rose and Lena may think they are living a life free from the cultural influence of their mothers’ childhoods, but Tan shows that the fates of the eight women are knit together, their stories echoing in concentric circles rather than running in straight lines.

Even if circumstantial cultural differences exist, blood binds generations together.

Even as the women struggle to understand one another, Tan illustrates how bridges are built between generations. In the story “Scar,” An-Mei describes how her mother cut her hand and spilled her blood as an act of mourning for An-Mei’s grandmother, “This is how a daughter honors her mother. It is shou so deep it is in your bones…. You must peel off your skin, and that of your mother, and her mother before her. Until there is nothing. No scar, no skin, no flesh.” An-Mei believes Rose does not understand a kind of shou that would involve inflicting pain on herself to honor her mother. But Tan uses shou (寿), meaning life and longevity, to point to the longevity that is formed by the connection between mothers and daughters, each generation a rebirth of the previous one. Even if circumstantial cultural differences exist, blood binds generations together.

Entrusted with the stories of each woman in The Joy Luck Club, readers must reckon with the cultural and generational gaps between them. A child of immigrant parents may identify with the daughters’ struggles to fit into society and understand their mothers. Grandparents may connect with the difficulty of telling their life stories, worried that the culture has changed or their wisdom is not relevant. Each time I re-read Tan’s novel I feel a sense of coming home to the familiar cadences of Mandarin and unspoken assumptions of Chinese culture while simultaneously sympathizing with the daughters’ discomfort at sitting between two cultures’ ways of viewing the world.

The Joy Luck Club forces me to chart a bridge between my native and adopted homelands and the generations who came before me.
