our graduation stage, I was excited to experience work and the adult world as a page-turning book, a class without the stress of an exam at the end. I imagined conversations radiating beyond the confines of the classroom, people with broad interests and hobbies coming together simply because they happened to work in the same office. Meeting my starting cohort—three other recent graduates who seemed as excited about learning and reading as I was—confirmed my vision. Amidst onboarding and assigned work, the lunchroom became a space where we talked about final dissertations and future goals. It quickly became my favorite time of day, a pause from productivity where thoughts and ideas could break out of our heads.

A few weeks in, we started to realize how quiet the rest of the office was. Rather, it was full of a particular kind of noise: headphones humming, white-noise machines whispering. The soft, constant insulation of sound dulled distraction, but it gave me a headache after a while. When the excitement of orientation wore off, we stuffed our ears with cotton so we could work and work and work. While my cohort still took long lunches, I noticed that for the other employees, lunch was a brief refueling rather than a shared hour; it was a biological necessity rather than a social one. People ate quickly, eyes on screens, minutes draining away until the return to a meeting or call.

At first, this felt like a neutral feature of adult life. People were tired. The workday was long. Silence and scrolling on phones, I told myself, was simply another form of rest. But over time, I began to notice that when conversation did surface—when someone ventured beyond small talk—it often landed awkwardly, as if the table had not agreed to host it. Critical questions about the private finance system with which we worked produced visible discomfort. Questions about what we were reading were replaced with conversations about the latest reality television episode. We repeated polite conversation, smoothing over our real interests. Safe topics circulated instead: weekend plans and the latest headline already half-forgotten. These conversations were easier to navigate, requiring little risk and no sustained attention. Over time, it was not just depth that disappeared, but the impulse to ask questions and entertain each others’ interests at all.

The conversations that broke the mold did not disappear entirely; they were simply displaced. Conversations about private equity, AI, or the culture of endless growth moved to coffee breaks, muttered over the kettle when no one else was around. They occurred in fragments, hurried yet invaluable, offering a breath of fresh air amidst the dulling monotony. Slowly, without any formal prohibition, the boundaries of adult life became clear. There were places where intellectual curiosity belonged, and everyone in the office was too tired for it.

What surprised me most was not the absence of deep conversation, but the way many of us came to soften our contributions. We learned to laugh off our interests, to preface questions with uncertainty. We cloaked critique in irony, wrapped theory in jokes, trimmed opinions before they could be registered as too serious. Our interests in understanding the world on a deeper level and continuing to learn without boundaries became something to be managed.

<img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/farefwd.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Jozef_Mehoffer_-_Sketch_to_the_Painting__Conversation__-_MNK_II-b-4055_-_National_Museum_Krakow.jpg?fit=750%2C450&ssl=1" title="Józef_Mehoffer_-_Sketch_to_the_Painting__Conversation__-_MNK_II-b-4055_-_National_Museum_Kraków" alt="Muzeum Narodowe w Krakowie; www.zbiory.mnk.pl ;MNK II-b-4055;;fot. The transition felt almost physical, as though I had broken out of a sealed plastic container left too long in the refrigerator. The reheated, meal-prepped lunches of office life gave way to dining hall food. The meals themselves were not necessarily better, but they were shared, accompanied by vibrant conversations.

During my first week, I found myself seated across from a scholar who studied the medieval Middle East, and another student from Turkey. Over dinner, conversation unfolded easily and without direction. We spoke about the Ottoman Empire, about historical memory, about the ways national narratives are shaped and contested. In the span of a meal, I learned more about Turkey and its past than I had learned since studying for a school exam years ago. What struck me was not the expertise on display, but the sincerity of the genuine exchange. No one was performing intelligence or attempting to prove themselves, rather they welcomed the curiosity that guided us. Casual intellectualism emerged through attentive listening and the sharing of stories.

It would be easy to romanticize moments like these as uniquely academic, to conclude that such conversations belong only within university walls. Of course, those who select into graduate school will be searching for intellectual conversations. But that would miss the point. What I experienced was not a superiority of academic intelligence, but the presence of something more ordinary and, in many ways, more important: a shared willingness to think and learn together. This willingness is a basic condition of intelligence itself. Without the impulse to ask questions, to revise our assumptions, and to remain open to other perspectives, knowledge becomes static, something that can be AI-generated, rather than something we actively participate in shaping.

Casual intellectualism occupies a space between dull, repetitive conversations and inaccessible academic discourse. It does not demand formal expertise or exhaustive argument; it asks only for attentiveness and a willingness to follow a question where it leads, even temporarily. It is intellectual not because it is technical, but because it takes ideas seriously as part of ordinary life; it is present in our curiosity about things that do not immediately concern us. Importantly, it does not belong to academics alone. It thrives wherever people are willing to listen and speak honestly about what they are trying to understand. It can emerge at a dinner table, in a break room, or over coffee. It is something valuable that all of us lose when the workday becomes a dull, monotonous buzz.

The philosopher and critic Mikhail Bakhtin argued for thought itself as fundamentally relational. Meaning, he thought, emerges not from isolated cognition but from interaction among voices, from conversation itself. Therefore, intelligence is not a private occurrence locked in one’s own silent thoughts, but it is formed in conversation, shaped by culture, and sustained by responsiveness to others. It is measured less by what we know than by how willing we are to engage, to listen closely, to ask real questions, to remain open to being surprised.

At a time when artificial systems are increasingly capable of processing information, what distinguishes natural intelligence is not speed or scale, but depth and presence. Machines can generate answers, but they cannot share meals with us. Human intelligence is relational before it is analytical; it grows through curiosity expressed in shared spaces. When we retreat into silence or default to distraction, we do not only protect ourselves from fatigue; we relinquish the interactions that generate excitement.

Reviving casual intellectual life does not require turning the lunch table into a seminar; it begins with small habits of attention and commitment to remaining curious about one another.

The cultivation of casual intellectualism does not only depend on individual ability or willingness, but also on the environments that invite or discourage curiosity. Many of our contemporary spaces are quietly hostile to sustained conversation. We live in a moment when knowledge is more accessible than ever before. Information flows endlessly across platforms, available on demand. Yet the conditions required for understanding—attention, listening, and openness—are increasingly rare.

The modern workplace, more than almost any other space in adult life, shapes how we speak and think together. Offices increasingly prioritize measurable output, efficiency, and constant responsiveness. AI and outsourcing have taken away many opportunities for interpersonal communication and relationships. Modern hiring practices can remove most of the human interaction from applying to jobs altogether. Once in the office, headphones signal concentration, calendars fragment the day, and lunch becomes a brief logistical pause rather than a social gathering. In such an environment, conversation can be implicitly evaluated for its usefulness. A question that advances a project is typically welcomed, but questions for the sake of curiosity can feel harder to justify.

These workplace norms do not explicitly forbid intellectual conversation, but they quietly discourage it. The expectation of productivity compresses the time and psychological space required for reflection. Even moments that might invite discussion—the lunch table or the walk to refill coffee—remain governed by efficiency and exhaustion. Many employees also experience a subtle pressure that intellectual life may belong elsewhere. Reading, reflection, and exploratory conversation are implicitly coded as hobbies rather than part of professional life.

In response, many of us learn to keep our curiosity compartmentalized. We read and think in private, saving our questions for sanctioned spaces or solitary moments. Over time, this habit reshapes our sense of what conversation is for. We come to expect little from our conversations and relationships, and so we ask little of ourselves in return. We dull our engagement with the world in the hopes of making the day easier to endure, but in the process, we narrow our sense of what day-to-day life can hold.

When conversation becomes shallow by default, our capacity for understanding difference weakens. We become less practiced not only at holding complex ideas, but at caring to learn about them in the first place. We lose the small, everyday opportunities to expand our imagination, to see the world through lenses other than our own. This narrowing has consequences not only for our own inner lives but also for the office culture of curiosity and passion for continued learning that many companies strive to cultivate.

None of this is to deny the value of rest or lightness. Easy media and casual conversation have their place; not every lunch needs to be a seminar. Intellectual curiosity can be present in conversations that do not fit the stereotype of intellectualism; it is not the subject matter that determines the quality of a conversation. But there is a difference between rest and disengagement, between relief and resignation. When conversations become repetitive, lifeless, and disembodied, and when we repeatedly choose the path of least intellectual resistance, we risk losing our intellectual curiosity altogether.

Reviving casual intellectual life does not require turning the lunch table into a seminar; it begins with small habits of attention and commitment to remaining curious about one another. Instead of letting a surprising comment pass with an awkward silence, we can ask a follow-up question. When a colleague mentions a book, a class, or some other discovery that falls outside the immediate demands of the workday, we can linger for a moment rather than steering the conversation back to safer ground. Questions as simple as “What drew you to that?”; “What surprised you most?”; or “What do you think people misunderstand?” signal that expansion is welcome. Simple questions can transform a passing remark into an invitation to think together.

Organizations can also help by creating and protecting spaces or times not governed entirely by productivity. Shared meals, common rooms, and informal gatherings matter not because they increase efficiency, but because they allow colleagues to encounter one another as people, unrestricted by their functional roles. A communal space that is genuinely free from added pressure creates the possibility for conversation to unfold. If we want to preserve casual intellectualism, we must also preserve something more basic: the everyday practice of curiosity. Making room for it—at the lunch table or elsewhere—is not an indulgence, but a way of sustaining the very form of intelligence that allows us to keep learning from one another.

Artwork:
Pieter Bruegel the Elder, The Harvesters, 1565 (Wikimedia Commons)
Józef Mehoffer, Sketch to the Painting “Conversation,” 1895 (Wikimedia Commons)
Edward Hopper, Automat, 1927 (Wikimedia Commons)

Elle Muller holds a BA in English & Creative Writing and Theatre from Dartmouth College.
