When, at 1:00 am, our neighbor rises<\/p>

for his nightly ritual, plinks a bit, then\u2014<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

perhaps inspired\u2014passionately pounds out<\/p>

\u201cWhen I Survey the Wondrous Cross,\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

my husband refuses to survey anything,<\/p>

keeps his eyes shut, plugs his ears. I stumble<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

to the nearby crib, nurse Baby to (next up)<\/p>

blind Fanny\u2019s \u201cBlessed Assurance.\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

None comes to me. My child accepts the loud<\/p>

lullabies and coos\u2014eventually. My husband snores<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

harmony, but by 3:00 am, I\u2019m asking,<\/p>

\u201cAnd Can It Be That I Should Gain\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

even a second of sleep? Sure, \u201cI Love<\/p>

to Tell the Story\u201d of \u201cStanding on the Promises,\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

but all I can do is \u201cCount My Blessings\u201d until<\/p>

\u201cMine Eyes Have Seen the Glory\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

of finally 4:00 am, and then, Oh, \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d!<\/p>
