Sopranos on one side, altos on another, tenors and basses facing them. The leader stands in the open center. Someone “keys” the tune by humming a starting pitch, and the room answers by beating time with their right hands. No microphones. No stage. The singing begins not with words but with syllables—fa, sol, la, mi—like scaffolding before the house. Sound arrives from all directions, the four parts facing inward, so the chord blooms in the middle. Here, in a Sacred Harp hollow square, you do not watch a performance; you join the work. After the syllables, the lyrics come in plain, old-ink poetry about sorrow, hope, death, and mercy, voices pressing courage into one another, measure by measure. You can hear it on recordings of “I’m Going Home.” Any YouTube video will do. Shapes first, then text, the whole room turning into a single breathing body. This is how a room turns listeners into a people, and people into community.

Across four distinct American traditions—Sacred Harp shape-note singing, the Old Time Song services associated with Dr. C. J. Johnson, Bernice Johnson Reagon’s work with a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, and the Appalachian devotional style many met through Ralph Stanley—the same grammar keeps appearing. Unamplified voices. An inward or participant-facing orientation. Leadership that rotates or calls and answers rather than commands. A bias toward participation over polish. For many adults today, church is the only room where we still sing together; that scarcity is changing us.

In Sacred Harp the square is not decoration. It is social technology. Four parts face one another so the song’s center is literally shared space. The leader steps into that center for one song, then someone else takes the next. A singer “keys” by ear rather than device, and the room sets off at a tempo that fits the moment. Newcomers are recruited body-first: beat time with your hand, sing the shapes before the words, lock eyes with the person across from you. Excellence invites rather than excludes. Born of nineteenth-century tunebooks and sustained by community singings across the South and far beyond, the practice distributes agency by design. No star performer is required; the room carries the weight.

In Dr. Johnson’s Old Time Song services, preaching and singing braid into one act. A line spoken from the pulpit lands on a pitch and becomes a phrase. The congregation answers. The answer returns the preacher to speech, which tilts back into melody. On “I’m Working on the Building,” one of the songs on The Old Time Song Service album, you can hear a single line lift, the room answer, and speech return as song again. There is no drum kit. Pews and floorboards supply the pulse as bodies rock and feet tap. The room knows when to come in because the grammar of call and response—one voice invites, the room answers—has been learned together over years. Agency is shared. A voice calls, and the people make church by answering. The sound is documented on Savoy releases and echoed in storefront and sanctuary services across the South and Midwest, where congregations sing their theology into being.

Born of nineteenth-century tunebooks and sustained by community singings across the South and far beyond, the practice distributes agency by design. With Sweet Honey in the Rock she extended the lineage of the Freedom Songs, hymns and anthems sung by participants in the civil rights movement, into concerts where the audience learned, not just listened. A single voice begins a line and then leaves space on purpose. The lead opens her palm on a rest and holds the silence until the room steps into it. In “Come and Go with Me” the invitation is explicit. The audience answers right on the word come before the lead finishes the phrase; first a unison rises, then a third above, and a quiet smile ripples through the rows. What happens onstage is not mere display. It is a rehearsal for life outside the venue. You can carry this line. You can lift a verse that does not require a perfect voice to be true. Reagon, a Freedom Singer and scholar, built performances that teach the room to sing.

Then there is the Appalachian devotional stream, the one many encountered on a different stage. A single voice sings “Gloryland” without accompaniment, every syllable moving like careful steps across a wooden floor. The style owes less to commerce than to family and church, to Primitive Baptist and house-singing traditions often led by a deacon “lining out”—one voice sings a phrase and the room repeats it. It is austere on purpose. The voice seeks not sweetness but naked speech, prayer that becomes melody because it must, because talking will not bear the load. A single starting pitch is taken from the air; the congregation finds the chord by memory and nearness. The blend can be rough, unison or near-unison, edges that are not mistakes but witness. When one voice stands alone it does not stand alone for long. Other voices rise to meet it, and the room becomes the instrument.

List the constraints common to these practices and it sounds like less with less: few instruments, little amplification, dispersed or segregated communities, thin money, heavy weeks. Yet constraints can be chisels. They carve away the need for specialists to mediate the experience. They invite people with nothing but voices and time to make something durable. Sacred Harp grew sturdy in scattered communities where a songbook was a library and a gathering was a school. The ceremony—the hand beating and the syllables—conserves knowledge. Once you learn to read the shapes, you carry a world in your throat. A leader matters, but the room belongs to everyone.

In Black church contexts where Johnson’s services thrived, congregational participation made resilience audible. The grammar guaranteed no one sang alone. Theology was not only preached down. It was sung back up by people whose weeks were heavy. Where life had been shaped by exclusion and want, the service became a school for hope, not by denying reality but by sounding it in a key that can be carried. The room taught the body what to do with grief and with joy. Answer, and the answer will keep you.

Freedom Songs that fueled civil-rights work were never just tactics. They were breath-control under pressure, a way to become a “we” in public. With Sweet Honey, Reagon helped carry that “we” into classrooms and stages without losing the invitation. The ensemble could have been a choir of marvels, and they were, but the marvel that mattered most was the line the audience could hold. Call, wait, welcome the response. A pedagogy and a promise, enacted in real time with strangers who leave less strange.

In the Appalachian devotional mode simplicity can feel like severity, and sometimes it is—an art stripped to bone. But austerity here is not meanness. It is concentration. Without instruments the voice carries everything: confession, petition, lament. Rough blend in family or church singing does not flatten difference. It holds difference inside one song. That is mercy so practical it is easy to miss. You are loved enough to be carried and respected enough to carry.

<div class="elementor-element elementor-element-a113f6c style="font-weight: 400;">different histories, same logic of hope: make neighbors out of strangers with a song. The learning is not theoretical. Researchers talk about synchrony and music-evoked memory; terms aside, the changes are felt. The first formation is attention. In a hollow square you keep time with your hand because the room needs you to hold time. In responsorial traditions you learn to wait and then answer precisely, not louder than the others and not shy of them. You listen for the person across from you and balance your voice with theirs in real time. That is moral training disguised as music.

The second formation is distributed agency. Many of us live where excellence is privatized and leadership scarce. These traditions resist that economy. When leadership rotates, when the call expects an answer and leaves room for it, when the stage instructs and then hands the song to the seats, skill becomes a gift that multiplies rather than hoards. This is not a denial of excellence. It is excellence as invitation. Come with us. We will make you good.

The third formation is courage and consolation. In rooms like these, frail voices are not liabilities. They are load-bearing. Harmony lets the unsure stand inside sound they did not make alone. The chord that blooms in the center of the square feels like proof we are more than the sum of our fears. In a song service a congregation can throw its answer around a preacher until both are carried along by something larger. In an Appalachian lament an exposed line can summon consent to reality. Yes, death is near. Yes, mercy is nearer. Even the science, as far as it goes, is consoling. Shared rhythm nudges us toward prosocial moods, and familiar songs can retrieve memories from the rubble of neurological disease. None of this drains wonder. It suggests our bodies were made to be built by shared sound. The soul has excellent instruments in bone and breath.

If you have never sung in any of these rooms, you do not need credentials. You need a door. One door is a public Sacred Harp sing. Most are open to beginners. Loaner books often sit on a table by the door. Sit where your voice feels comfortable and try “I’m Going Home,” shapes first, then words. The square will teach you how to keep time and how to tune your breath to the people around you. Someone may hand you the chance to lead. Take it or do not. Either way, the chords will land in the center like a body finding balance.

Another door is the Old Time Song Service as captured on record. Let one run from start to finish. “Working on the Building” is a good entry. Notice where speech tilts into melody and the room picks it up. Notice where the people become the beat. If you find yourself answering out loud in your kitchen, you have learned the grammar.

A third door is to accept an invitation during a concert where the performers actually want you. Sweet Honey in the Rock has modeled this for decades. Or try it at home. One person sings a simple line from “Come and Go with Me,” and the others repeat it. At first the room will answer in unison. Then someone will find a third above without being told. If that feels daunting, hum a single pitch under the line. Harmony is work a body can learn in place.

And another door: listen to “Gloryland” as devotional rather than novelty. Attend to the silence around the words as part of the music. It teaches a different courage, the courage to stand in a plain line and trust the room to meet you. A deacon might “line” the phrase first; the room finds the note. You may feel the hair on your arms lift. That is a human response, not a trick.

It would be easy to consign these practices to heritage, something to admire at museum distance as the sound of harder times. No auditions. No special vocabulary required. The room is designed to teach you. If the first experience feels awkward, the second will feel less so. You are not a guest for long in a room like this. You are a participant, and participants learn by doing.

A stairwell is its own kind of square. A kitchen can be, too. The acoustics forgive us. Pick a tune you already know, an old hymn, a call-and-response spiritual, any refrain the whole house remembers. Borrow a Sacred Harp habit and sing syllables first, nonsense syllables or la-la-la, so the route lives in the body before the meaning climbs aboard. Appoint a leader for the first verse and then trade. Try a lined-out texture: one voice sings each phrase and the rest repeat. Or try call and response and leave generous space. If you want the mountain austerity that makes the room hold its breath, let one voice carry a verse alone, then answer with everyone. If the room can hold our breath, it can hold our burdens and return them lighter.

It would be easy to consign these practices to heritage, something to admire at museum distance as the sound of harder times. The need that shaped them has not passed. We are rich in amplification and poor in resonance. We have limitless recordings and too few rooms where our actual voices matter. Practices that train bodies for attention, patience, shared agency, courage, and consolation are not luxuries. They are civic goods. A room that teaches you to keep time for the sake of the people across from you is a school for deliberation. A chorus that refuses to go on until the answer comes back is a school for mutual regard. A song that leaves space for brittle voices to be held without embarrassment is a school for mercy. The fact that these schools grew in places marked by poverty, oppression, exile, and remoteness should not surprise us. Necessity is a good theorist. It discovered that when resources are thin, people are thick with breath and bone and the desire to belong.

If you have stood in a room where someone began and your mouth answered, you already know. Something in you wants more than spectatorship in your own life. These traditions offer a common gift. They make neighbors through an ordinary miracle. The technology is older than any device and new each time we try it: a chair, a pitch, a hand keeping time, a call that asks for an answer. Then the room does what rooms were made to do. It carries us for a while as if we were one instrument, because for a moment we are.

Illustrations by Sarah Clark;
from photos in the public domain

Brandon McNeice is Head of School at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Southwest Philadelphia.
