against each other<br \/>on one side of the lake. Its far bank slides in steep,<br \/>sheered off, crumbling, the way<br \/>with violence, we can make earth look.<br \/>But this was glacier. Sometimes it\u2019s hard<br \/>to tell what the world\u2019s done on its own.<br \/>Light strips the surfaces:<br \/>first, mountains\u2019 tips, then<br \/>drops down in increments<br \/>until they are fully bared.<\/p><p>In the offshoots, kokanee fight the current:<br \/>their heads are the last to lose the bottom\u2019s<br \/>color of rocks. Bodies redden, flap forward,<br \/>pounding to keep in one place.<br \/>Sliding back. I want them to account for<br \/>the gravity of trying, existing<br \/>in a liquid, changing world. Beside me,<br \/>a woman watches, a stranger.
