When did I ever thirst as much?<\/p>

Bend my body, thrash unwieldy<\/p>

legs, wheel my arms to rock<\/p>

toward a yielding warmth,<\/p>

toward skin and gathering and milk?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Did I tune my ears to silence<\/p>

when the singing stopped? My<\/p>

newborn eyes still colorless<\/p>

and dim, hungry for returning light.<\/p>

No. I remember crying in the dark,\u00a0<\/p>

wandering empty hallways toward<\/p>

my mother\u2019s room, trying<\/p>

Jen\u00a0Stewart Fueston<\/strong>\u00a0is the author of the newly released collection\u00a0Madonna, Complex\u00a0<\/em>(Cascade Books 2020) as well as two chapbooks,\u00a0Visitations<\/em>\u00a0(Finishing Line Press 2015) and\u00a0Latch<\/em>\u00a0(River Glass Books 2019). Her poetry has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net, and has appeared recently in publications such as\u00a0Structo, Relief: A Journal of Art & Faith,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Christian Century<\/em>.\u00a0She has taught writing at the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA, as well as internationally in Hungary, Turkey, and Lithuania.
