Reversal

By Ed Higgins

This poem was originally published in Christian Feminism Today.

Jonah would laugh,

no doubt,

at this miracle

of reversal:

Jesus,

fish of God,

now swallowed

in human flesh:

God in us,

digested—

spirit calories

feeding hunger cells

with forgiveness,

until finally,

Jonah-like,

we, too, turn

toward Nineveh,

imperfect messengers

filled with

wine-blood love,

and bread-broken
